NEW LIFE IRCA (INTEGRATED REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR ADDICTS)CHURACHANDPUR DISTRICT
NEW LIFE (IRCA), CHURACHANDPUR DISTRICT
With our dream to create an addiction free society. The New Life, IRCA (Integrated Rehabilitation centre for Addicts) started the first drug rehabilitation centre as a branch in Churachandpur district andhas been working successfully since 1993 under the sponsorship of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi.
Under the vision and mission of the Centre for Mental Hygiene. New Life rehabilitation Centre,Churachandpur branch has been undergoing number of activities to treat people with drug/substance addiction.
Since Churachandpur District is in close proximity to the border in Burma/Myanmar which is one of the ‘Golden Triangle’ infamous for its Illegal production of Heroin and Cocaine, supply and trading of Drugs through its porous border remains a big concern for the state of Manipur and the North east India as a whole. And it has a big impact on the local population mainly the youths who in turn are easily addicted to the menace of drugs. Our rehab centre has been working towards to create a social awareness to fight against the evils of abuse of alcohol and chemical substances by giving health care. Detoxification, Individual counseling, Group counseling, Input sessions, Family re- integration. Group therapy etc, during rehabilitation period and followed by After-care services for maintaining close contact with individuals and the family so as to prevent from relapse by encouraging forming a Self Help Group under the principles of Narcotics Anonymous (N.A).
It has been very encouraging that the centre has at least have been able to treat many people and helped in living a sober/clean life after their discharge from the centre through regular follow-ups and visits yet the problem of drug addiction remains a big concern in Churachandpur district as well as in Manipur.
Monitoring & Evaluation of Discharged Patients
To monitor the discharged patients, follow-up activities have been conducted in the following ways:
  1. Monitoring & Evaluation of Discharged Patients
  2. Home visits by the Counsellor / Social Worker
  3. Communication through telephone & letters
  4. Visiting the vulnerable areas where both recovering & suffering addicts are present
  5. Information from friends and others
To sum up, an encouraging part of NEW LIFE IRCA has been the constant recovery meetings of clients who stay clean when they are discharged from the rehabilitation centre, wherein they are able to be amongst clean like minded support groups who are a constant source of support when they are low or on the verge of relapsing. Thus, the previous year has been a year full of activities and meetings doing what we can in our capabilities to stop substance abuse and savings the youths of our society fall falling prey to the menace of drug addiction. This has been evident from the fact that the rehabilitation centre located at Imphal, clients have been on a constant waiting list throughout the year, even though we are a 15 bedded rehabilitation centre, thus the need to upgrade is very much felt for the many years, we hope to upgrade to a 30 or a 50 bedded centre.
